Mortar and Pestle at the Apothecary
2013
Glass
As personal exploration, I developed this piece to reflect on two ancient practices, blowing glass and medicine. Both of these fields provided technologies that continued to grow and to this day are valued among almost all cultures and societies. I created a mortar and pestle out of cane, an ancient technique created by the Romans. Mortars and pestles were highly valued by pharmacists and physicians working in the apothecaries as a means of crushing, mixing, and extracting certain materials.
